13-year-old gang member caught with gun

[20 November 2008]

A 13-year-old boy was found with a handgun and ammunition in a sock, a court was told on Wednesday.

The boy was looking after the Russian automatic pistol in the hope of winning a 'promotion' in his gang. He is believed to be the youngest person arrested in Britain for possessing a weapon. He also kept a machete, which he said was for his own protection, in his wardrobe. The weapons were found last August when police searched the boy's south London home by officers investigating the gang. Both the teenager and his mother denied he had any weapons, but the Baikal pistol was found in a rucksack below the stairs. Two silencers and 21 cartridges were also found, along with the machete.
