Students text to combat crime
Crimestoppers rolled-out a pilot in three east London schools during June, specifically focusing on combating knife crime. For the first time, mobile phone users in the UK had the ability to provide anonymous crime-fighting information through the power of text messaging. As the charity embraces new technology, it is important that strong anonymity protections are firmly in place. Partnering with MBlox, the system allows text messages to be sent to a dedicated number which is then encrypted and routed through a secure server, so details of the informant remain anonymous. Crimestoppers only receives the content of the message. Indications from the pilot tell us that the quality of information received so far is of real value to law enforcement. A roll-out across Tower Hamlets is planned for September. Read more about Crimestoppers' text messaging pilot

Inside the UK prison service

Corruption and other discrepancies in prisons have been highlighted in BBC's current series 'Criminal Justice', while the issue of overcrowding has also been a hot topic in the media. Dawkins argues that in order to address overcrowding we need to get to the root of current crime trends - educating young people about the consequences of their actions and regaining community spirit.
